Putting it into practice: scenarios
Bringing it together: how rights, the Code, dementia awareness, SIRS and privacy work in real situations.

Scenario: a risky choice
Mrs L wants to walk to the shops alone although she has fallen before. Talk with her about the risks and what would make it safer — a walking aid, a phone, a time to check in. Respect her decision, record it and tell your supervisor so her care plan can be updated.
Scenario: a bruise nobody can explain
You notice a new bruise on Mr K's arm and he seems frightened of a particular visitor. Make sure he is safe and gets any care he needs, tell your supervisor straight away and record what you saw. Don't question the visitor yourself. Your provider decides whether it is a reportable incident and notifies the Commission.
Scenario: a request on social media
A resident's grandchild asks you to post a photo of the birthday party. Personal information and images are only shared with consent and in line with your provider's policy — refer the request to your supervisor.
Remember
When in doubt: make the person safe, respect their choices, speak up early and follow your provider's procedures. This awareness course doesn't replace your employer's induction or mandatory training.
