What dementia is

Dementia is an umbrella term for conditions that affect memory, thinking, behaviour and the ability to manage everyday tasks. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form. Many people receiving aged care live with dementia, and it affects each person differently.

A person living with dementia keeps all of their rights. The Statement of Rights specifically recognises that assessments should respect cognitive conditions such as dementia.

Communicating well

Approach from the front and say who you are. Use short, simple sentences and one question at a time. Give the person time. Use their name, gestures and a calm tone. Don't argue or correct them about things that upset them — respond to the feeling behind the words.

Changed behaviours

Distress, agitation or refusing care is often a way of communicating a need — pain, hunger, needing the toilet, feeling cold, frightened or overwhelmed. Look for the cause, follow the person's care and behaviour support plan, and tell your supervisor about new or changed behaviours.

A person with dementia may not be able to tell you they have been hurt or upset. That makes noticing and reporting changes even more important.

The National Dementia Helpline (1800 100 500) is a free, confidential service available 24 hours a day.
