Privacy, confidentiality and handling information

Protecting people's personal information and respecting their personal privacy during care.

Two kinds of privacy

Personal privacy is about dignity during care — knocking before entering, asking permission before personal care and providing it somewhere private. Information privacy is about how personal details, such as health and financial information, are collected, used, stored and shared.

Respect for privacy and information is one of the rights in the Statement of Rights, and respecting privacy is one of the behaviours in the Code of Conduct.

Good habits

Share information only with people who need it for the person's care, following your provider's policies. Don't discuss residents or clients where others can hear. Never take photos or post about people you support on social media. Log out of systems and keep records secure. Tell your provider straight away if information is lost or shared by mistake.

Organisations covered by the Privacy Act must follow the Australian Privacy Principles when they handle personal information. Your provider's privacy policy explains how this applies in your workplace.
