Infection control when transporting participants

Cars and vans are shared, enclosed spaces. How to keep them clean and what to do if someone is unwell.

Why vehicles matter

A car is a small shared space with surfaces everyone touches — door handles, seatbelts, grab handles, wheelchair restraints. It is easy for germs to pass between participants, workers and family.

Before and after each trip

  • Clean your hands before helping someone into the vehicle and after.
  • Wipe high-touch surfaces — handles, seatbelt buckles, restraints, ramps and lifts — as your provider's procedure requires.
  • Keep hand rub, wipes, gloves, masks and waste bags in the vehicle.

If a participant is unwell

  • Check with your provider before transporting someone with symptoms.
  • Follow your provider's mask guidance for respiratory symptoms, and improve ventilation where it's safe.
  • Clean the vehicle afterwards, including any spill, before the next participant travels.

Spills in the car

Put on gloves, absorb and remove the bulk of the spill with paper towels into a waste bag, clean, then disinfect if your procedure requires it. Clean your hands afterwards and report it.
