Three different steps
- Cleaning removes dirt, product and organic matter — always the first step.
- Disinfection uses a chemical to kill many germs on a clean surface.
- Sterilisation kills all microorganisms, usually in a steam steriliser (autoclave).
Which tools need what
- Items that penetrate or may penetrate the skin need to be sterile or single-use.
- Reusable tools that touch intact skin are cleaned and then disinfected, as your procedures and local rules require.
- Single-use items are used once and thrown away.
Good practice
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for products and equipment.
- Store clean tools in a clean, covered container.
- Keep records if your steriliser or council requires them.
