Where the infection risks are
- Needles and sharps contaminated with blood
- Cross-contamination from gloved hands touching machines, bottles, phones and chairs
- Ink caps, rinse cups and products shared between clients
- Aftercare problems when clients aren't given clear instructions
The habits that matter most
- Use single-use needles and dispose of sharps straight into an approved container
- Barrier-wrap machines, cords and bottles, and change gloves whenever you touch something outside the clean field
- Decant ink and products into single-use caps for each client
- Clean and disinfect the workstation between clients
- Know your exposure procedure for needlestick injuries
Rules and expectations
Rules for tattoo and piercing businesses are set by each state and often enforced by local councils. In some states, such as Queensland, a higher-risk personal appearance services licence requires an approved infection control qualification — this awareness course does not meet that requirement. Use it to build and refresh knowledge, and check your licence conditions.
What the course covers
Eight short modules: how infections spread, hand hygiene, PPE, respiratory hygiene, cleaning and disinfection, blood and body fluid spills, waste, linen and sharps, and standard and transmission-based precautions. Then a 20-question assessment and your certificate.
Questions
Will this satisfy my licence?+
Not if your licence requires an approved or accredited infection control qualification. This course is awareness training — ideal for new staff, apprentices and refreshers.
Is this an accredited course?+
No. It is a non-accredited infection control awareness course. It is not a nationally recognised qualification and is not HLTINF006 or any other unit of competency. If a licence, job advertisement or employer asks for a specific unit of competency, check before buying.
