Where the infection risks are

  • Splashes and aerosols from the mouth during treatment
  • Sharp instruments and needles

  • Instruments that must be reprocessed correctly between patients

The habits that matter most

  • Wear the PPE the procedure requires — mask, eye protection, gloves and gown
  • Change gloves and clean your hands between patients
  • Follow the practice's procedures for cleaning surfaces and handling instruments
  • Dispose of sharps immediately into an approved container
  • Know the exposure procedure for needlestick and splash injuries

Rules and expectations

Dental practices in Australia follow the Dental Board of Australia's infection control guidelines and related standards. Your practice will train you in its specific procedures, including instrument reprocessing — this course gives you the underlying principles.

What the course covers

Eight short modules: how infections spread, hand hygiene, PPE, respiratory hygiene, cleaning and disinfection, blood and body fluid spills, waste, linen and sharps, and standard and transmission-based precautions. Then a 20-question assessment and your certificate.
