Cleaner wearing gloves cleaning a surface

Where the infection risks are

  • High-touch surfaces: door handles, lift buttons, switches, shared desks and kitchens
  • Washrooms and toilets, and cloths carried from there to other areas
  • Body fluid spills such as vomit in public areas
  • Mixing or misusing cleaning chemicals

The habits that matter most

  • Use colour-coded cloths and keep toilet equipment separate
  • Clean before you disinfect, and respect contact times
  • Change mop water and cloths often
  • Never mix chemicals — read the label and the SDS
  • Clean your hands when you take gloves off

Rules and expectations

Cleaning businesses and the sites they service have work health and safety duties to manage hazards, including biological hazards and hazardous chemicals. Many contracts — especially in care, education and healthcare — ask for evidence of infection control training.

What the course covers

Eight core modules — how infections spread, hand hygiene, PPE, respiratory hygiene, cleaning and disinfection, blood and body fluid spills, waste, linen and sharps, and precautions and outbreaks — plus a module written for your sector. Then a 20-question assessment and your certificate.

Questions

Can a cleaning company train its whole team?+

Yes. Team packs give each cleaner a code for the certificate, with a page that shows who has finished — useful evidence for clients and tenders.

Is this an accredited course?+

No. It is a non-accredited infection control awareness course. It is not a nationally recognised qualification and is not HLTINF006 or any other unit of competency. If a licence, job advertisement or employer asks for a specific unit of competency, check before buying.
