Last reviewed October 2026

Prepare

  • Gather everything first: nappy, wipes, clean clothes, plastic bag and gloves.
  • Make sure the change mat is clean.

Change

  1. Put on gloves.
  2. Remove the soiled nappy and place it straight in the bag or nappy bin.
  3. Clean the child's bottom and put on the clean nappy.
  4. Remove gloves before dressing the child or touching anything else.

Finish

  1. Wash the child's hands and return them to the group.
  2. Clean the change mat with detergent and water, and disinfect if your policy requires it.
  3. Wash your own hands with soap and water.
  4. Record the change if your service requires it.

Keep nappy change and food preparation areas completely separate.
