Infection control in disability support

Working safely across homes, vehicles, shared accommodation and the community.

Support worker with a participant

Be self-sufficient

Carry personal hand rub, gloves, aprons, masks and waste bags so you can work safely anywhere — including the car and community venues where there may be no sink.

Between participants

Clean your hands when you arrive, before and after personal care, and when you leave. Keep your phone, keys and bag off participants' beds and benches, and clean your phone regularly.

Shared homes and vehicles

In supported accommodation, keep personal items such as towels, razors and toothbrushes separate. Wipe high-touch surfaces in vehicles — door handles, seat belts and wheelchair restraints — as your procedures require.

Respect and dignity

Explain why you are wearing gloves or a mask, agree with the participant where products and waste will be kept, and respect their home while keeping everyone safe.

Key points

Carry your own supplies to every shift.

Keep personal items separate in shared homes.

Explain precautions respectfully.

1

Prepare supplies before the shift

2

Clean hands at every arrival and exit

3

Report illness before the next visit

On the job

Follow your workplace procedures, product instructions and supervisor guidance. If you are unsure, stop and ask before continuing the task.
