Infection control in childcare
Nappy changes, toys, food, unwell children and outbreaks in early learning services.

Nappy changes and toileting
Use gloves for nappy changes, clean the change mat after every use, and wash your hands — and the child's — with soap and water afterwards. Remove gloves before touching straps, benches or the next child.
Toys and play areas
Set aside toys that have been mouthed and clean them before other children use them. Clean high-touch surfaces and shared resources on a regular schedule.
Food
Wash hands with soap and water before preparing or serving food, and keep nappy-change and food areas completely separate.
Unwell children and outbreaks
Follow your service's exclusion periods for unwell children and staff, record illness in the register, tell your nominated supervisor about clusters and follow notification requirements for conditions such as gastroenteritis.
