Infection control in beauty and personal services

Tools, single-use items, skin, blood and the rules that apply to your business.

Tools and single-use items

Clean, then disinfect or sterilise reusable tools as your procedures require. Single-use items — files, buffers, wax spatulas, razor blades, needles — are used once and thrown away.

No double-dipping

Decant wax, creams and products for each client, or use pumps. Never dip a used spatula or applicator back into a shared pot.

Skin and blood

Don't treat over broken, infected or inflamed skin. Treat any blood as infectious: gloves on, clean up, dispose of waste safely and clean your hands. Put needles and blades straight into a sharps container.

Rules for your business

Local councils register and inspect many beauty and skin penetration businesses. Some licences — such as higher-risk personal appearance services in Queensland — require an approved infection control qualification, which this awareness course does not replace.
